Torre di Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre di Pisa) is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols in the world and the main attraction of the city of Pisa. Begun in 1173 as a bell tower for the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the tower is famous for its characteristic tilt, caused by uneven subsidence of the ground during construction. The tower is about 56 meters high and leans by about 4 degrees, giving it a unique and bizarre appearance.

Despite its structural problems, the tower remains an outstanding example of medieval engineering and a symbol of tenacity and ingenuity. Every year, millions of tourists climb its spiral staircase to enjoy breathtaking views of Pisa and its surroundings. It’s best to book tickets in advance to avoid queues.

The Camposanto was founded in 1278 and completed in the 14th century. Legend has it that the Crusade brought soil from Golgotha, the site of Christ's crucifixion, and this soil filled the cemetery's courtyard, making the Camposanto a sacred place. This fact made the Camposanto a resting place for many prominent citizens of Pisa.
