Naples, Italy: city between the sea and Vesuvius

Perhaps Naples can be given the status of the most controversial city in Italy. Some people consider him dangerous and dirty, but to me he seemed bright, lively and friendly! You can stay in Naples for a few days or spend a whole week. I rented an apartment for a month in the heart of the city to learn more about the culture of the southern region of Italy. Here are the most interesting activities for tourists.

1. Walk around the old town

Go explore the narrow cobbled streets woven into a labyrinth. At any time of the year they are decorated with Italian flags, banners with football players, hearts and of course portraits of Diego Maradona. He has been an idol for Neapolitans for several decades. In restaurants you will see posters and songs dedicated to him.

The most beautiful streets worth seeing are via dei Tribunali, via S. Gregório Armeno, via Toledo. Here you can find great bars, try delicious fried pizza or buy souvenirs.

2. Shopping

Naples, like other Italian cities, can boast a large number of boutiques and a wide range of products. The main shopping street is via Toledo. From start to finish it is lined with luxury brands, local shops and amazing Italian restaurants. Pay attention to small cozy shops with Italian production, where you will find truly chic clothes and shoes at affordable prices.

3. Visit the square and gallery Umberto I

Few people know that in Naples there is a shopping gallery like in Milan. Of course, there are not many shops in it, but it is not inferior in beauty. Take photos here for your social networks!

Next to the gallery is the main square of Plebiscito. Amazing place with magnificent architecture. Here is the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, over which seagulls slowly circle; by the way, passers-by often feed them bread, which creates an incredible atmosphere.

4. Sunbathe on the beach

The beach area is not Naples' strong point. Almost the entire coastline is closed by a seaport where cargo and cruise ships dock. To get beautiful wide beaches you will have to leave the city; the journey will take from 1 to 2 hours. Many people prefer to sail to the island of Capri. However, if you don't have much time but want to swim, go to the public sandy beach of Lido Mappatella with warm water. It is shallow and quite small, so it is suitable for families with children.

5. Spanish Quarters

The Spanish Quarters, located in the center of Naples, are a unique historical area that has retained its flavor and atmosphere. Their name comes from the period of Spanish rule in the city, which lasted from the early 16th century to the mid-18th century. He left a bright imprint on the architecture and culture of the area. Spanish neighborhoods are famous for their narrow streets, tall buildings, and well-kept courtyards. Walking along the cobbled streets, you can feel yourself back in the days of old Naples, where every corner is imbued with history and culture.

But they are also known for their complex history of criminal activity. In the past, these narrow streets and hidden courtyards served as a hideout for various criminal groups, including the mafia, which remained in the shadows for a long time. Spanish neighborhoods were places where criminals could hide and plan their deeds without being persecuted. This added a certain element of danger to the area and created a kind of legend around it. Many people still try to avoid them, but personally I think that this place is absolutely safe at the moment.

5. Climb to the observation deck

Belvedere San Martino offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the entire magnificent landscape of this historic city at a glance. The lookout sits on top of one of the hills, providing stunning panoramic views of Vesuvius, the medieval city center, its colorful rooftops, as well as many historical and architectural monuments, including the famous Neapolitan castle, ancient churches and squares.

In the evening, when the sun sets, the area turns into a magical place with beautiful lighting and a romantic atmosphere, ideal for meetings and relaxing evening walks. It works around the clock. You can go up on foot or on a lift.
