Wine tours with tastings
The Douro Valley is the oldest wine-producing region in the country. The tradition of winemaking here dates back to the times of the Roman Empire. You can visit several vineyards for wine tasting either independently or with a guided tour. In September, you can even participate in the grape harvesting and pressing if you arrange it in advance with the vineyard owners.
Did you know that the DOC label indicates that the wine is produced and bottled in the same region where the grapes are grown?
In the Douro Valley, there are numerous outstanding wineries, and the choice depends on your preferences. Here are some well-known and interesting wineries in this region:

Train Ride
Your first train journey can be from Porto's São Bento station. However, if you arrive by another means, you can catch the Douro line in the town of Regua. The railway line was opened over 130 years ago to connect Porto with Spain. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of endless hills covered in vineyards and a tranquil river with cruise liners.
This traditional steam train operates from June to October. The journey in the 5 vintage carriages immerses its passengers in the past. Along the way, they offer food and entertainment.
Bicycle Rides
For those who want to see more, renting a bicycle is an ideal option! Ride past vineyards, climb the hills, and enjoy panoramic views of the river from above. You can find several rental shops along the waterfront in small villages. To make it less strenuous, opt for electric bikes. A more challenging route is located in the Peneda-Gerês Natural Park on the border with Spain. You can also embark on an exciting journey by car with breathtaking views.
River Cruises
In the past, the river was used to transport goods for trade and wine barrels, and now it's for tourists. Cruises can range from 1-2 hours to several days. On board, you can enjoy wine tasting with beautiful views! During evening cruises, you'll witness a star-studded sky. You can start in Porto and make your way to the Douro Valley or board at any of the docks in small towns, such as Pinhão.

How to Get to the Douro Valley
The best way to get to the Douro Valley is by car or a recreational vehicle that you can rent. This way, you can enjoy the scenic views along the way and reach even the most remote corners of the region. If this option doesn't suit you, I recommend using the railway or a cruise liner. Several times a day, trains depart from São Bento station in Porto to various towns in the Douro Valley. For river cruises, head to the main waterfront area in the Northern capital.
Where to stay in The Douro Valley
Spend a few nights in this picturesque region. For accommodation, you can find various rural estates; for example, many wineries offer overnight stays. You can also opt for luxurious hotels in historic mansions. I highly recommend Casa Quinta de São Cruz in Régua and The Vintage House - Douro.
